Poland win Eurovisin Dance

Poland claimed first place in the Eurovision Dance Contest, which was held in Scotland on Saturday.

Actor Marcin Mroczek and dancer Edyta Herbus won the votes of watchers throughout the continent with a routine set to Michael Jackson's music.

Russia finished second and Ukraine were third, while hosts UK finished ninth out of 14 competitors.

A television audience of millions watched the 135 minute programme, which came from Glasgow's SECC.

Graham Norton and Claudia Winkleman hosted the show, which featured 14 couples from Austria, Azerbaijan, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Sweden, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

Each couple - one celebrity and one professional dancer - performed a freestyle dance with a national flavour which could have elements of Latin and Ballroom.

A panel of expert judges as well as the TV audience voting from home then decided on the winner.

The UK was represented by Vincent Simone and Eastenders actress Louisa Lytton.

It is the second time the contest has been run. Finland won last year's vote.

"With this competition, we created a fantastic new Eurovision tradition, which we are confident will last for many years to come," said Bjorn Erichsen, Director of Eurovision TV.

Louisa & Vincent strutt their stuff

Strictly Come Dancing pair Louisa Lytton and Vincent Simone will represent the UK at Saturday night's Eurovision Dance Contest.

The former EastEnder and her professional partner have gone back to the ballroom for the second outing of the dancing tournament.

Couples from across Europe compete in the contest, held in Glasgow and screened on BBC1.

Lytton, 19, who plays Pc Beth Green in The Bill, was the youngest ever Strictly contestant when she appeared in the fourth series with the likes of Emma Bunton and victor Mark Ramprakash.

Italian-born Simone split with his lover and professional dance partner Flavia Cacace, amid rumours of a romance between Cacace and her Strictly Come Dancing partner Matt Di Angelo.

The Eurovision Dance Contest is fronted by Graham Norton and Claudia Winkleman and features a professional and non-professional from each nation.

Strictly Come Dancing judges Len Goodman and Craig Revel Horwood will comment on performances but the winner is decided by a public vote and a separate panel of judges.

Last year, Finland won the contest and Brendan Cole and Camilla Dallerup flopped, finishing second from last.

The Eurovision Dance Contest is taking place at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) and will be broadcast on BBC1 at 8pm.

Glasgow limbers up for Euro dance

Millions of people in 23 countries are expected to watch the Eurovision Dance Contest, which will take place at the SECC in Glasgow later. Television coverage will be hosted live on BBC One by Graham Norton and Claudia Winkleman.

The 135-minute programme will see 15 couples compete - each made up of one professional and one celebrity.

They will perform one freestyle dance with a national flavour which may have elements of Latin and Ballroom.

Strictly Come Dancing's Len Goodman and Craig Revell Horwood will offer comments on performances and artistic content.

Viewers will then be asked to vote on the choreography, costume and music.

EastEnders actress Louisa Lytton and her professional partner Vincent Simone will represent Britain.

The other 14 couples are from Austria, Azerbaijan, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden and Ukraine.

Carol Smillie, who will announce the UK vote results on Saturday night, said: "It's our turn to show the world what a fantastic venue Glasgow is, for the Eurovision Dance Contest.

"I'm thrilled to be announcing the UK votes, and I know the live Scottish audience will create an amazing atmosphere. There's no place better to go dancin' on a Saturday night, than Glasgow."

The inaugural event in London last year was won by Jussi Vaananen and Katja Koukkula, representing Finland.

UK entrants Brendan Cole and Camilla Dallerup, who competed on the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, were placed in 15th position - second last.

Strictly favourites together again

Reuniting for the first time since they wowed the crowds with their Strictly Come Dancing routines, former EastEnders actress Louisa Lytton and her professional partner Vincent Simone will go back to the ballroom one more time as they represent the UK in this year's Eurovision Dance Contest airing on BBC One on Saturday 6 September.

Invited to represent the nation at the second annual showcase of the continent's most complex choreography and riveting routines, Louisa and Vincent will waltz it out in the city of Glasgow in an effort to be crowned champions of European dance.

The youngest ever Strictly Come Dancing contestant, and currently starring in The Bill, Louisa competed in series four alongside other famous faces including Mark Ramprakash, Matt Dawson and Emma Bunton.

This time Louisa and Vincent are striving to reach the top spot as they bring together elements of Latin and Ballroom for a one chance, freestyle performance to incorporate the nation's dancing flavour.

Fronting the sequin-showered spectacular are Graham Norton and Claudia Winkleman, who return to present the second instalment of the electric European dance tournament.

Strictly Come Dancing stalwards Len Goodman and Craig Revel Horwood, who make up two of the fearsome foursome judging panel, will comment on the performances and artistic content.

Hosting the event, the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre(SECC) will welcome dancing couples from countries across Europe.

Each nation's dance entrants are made up of one professional performer and one non professional, usually a celebrity.

The winning couple will have to overcome the unpredictable scoreboard which reflects the public phone vote from across the competing countries.

There is added pressure, as well, with a panel of judges overseeing the proceedings. Their scores will contribute to a proportion of the final result.

Will Finland retain their crown or is an upset on the cards in the eagerly anticipated dancefloor extravaganza?

Louisa Lytton rose to fame in 2005 after landing the role of Ruby Allen in the BBC One's EastEnders, which she went on to play for two years. She appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in late 2006 and recently toured around the country with the Strictly Come Dancing tour. Currently Louisa stars as PC Beth Green in The Bill.

Vincent Simone is best known for his steps on Strictly Come Dancing. He first appeared on the fourth series, pairing up with Louisa Lytton to reach the quarter final. Vincent returned for the fifth series where he and partner Stephanie Beacham were eliminated in the second week. Originally from Italy, Vincent is a professional dancer and teaches with his dance partner Flavia Cacace, another favourite on Strictly Come Dancing.
